A yard of thick, even grass is the first thing anyone notices about a property. If what is there now is bare, patchy, or more weed than turf, sod resets it in a day instead of over a season of seeding and hoping.

Our sod installation process
We start by removing existing material from the work area — old lawn, brush, and debris — bringing in heavy equipment where the site calls for it. If the grade needs work, we correct it so rainwater flows away from structures toward a suitable drainage area.
With the ground prepared, sod is laid fresh, seams staggered and butted tight, and edges cut to the beds and hard surfaces. The finished lawn is rolled to press the roots into contact with the soil beneath.
The turnaround is deliberately quick — sod is a perishable product and the sooner it goes from farm to graded soil to watered lawn, the better it establishes.
The first two weeks decide it
New sod lives or dies on water. It needs to stay consistently moist while roots grow down into the soil beneath, which usually means watering daily, and more than once a day in summer heat.
Stay off it as much as possible early, hold the first mow until it has knit down and resists a gentle tug, and then keep the mower high. You will get specific watering guidance for the season your lawn goes in.
Common questions
- How soon can I walk on new sod?
- Keep traffic light for the first couple of weeks while it roots. Necessary crossing is fine; hosting a party on it is not. Pets are the usual challenge — worth planning where they will go in the meantime.
- Sod or seed?
- Sod gives you a finished lawn immediately, resists weeds because there is no bare soil for them to claim, and can go in through more of the season. Seed costs less and offers more grass-type choice, but takes a season to establish and needs the same watering discipline over longer. Slopes almost always favor sod — seed washes.
- When can sod be installed in Michigan?
- Any time the ground is workable and not frozen, roughly spring through late fall. Extreme summer heat is the hardest window because of the watering demand; spring and early fall are the easiest on a new lawn.
- Do you fix the grade first?
- When it needs it, yes — and it usually does on a lawn that failed. Laying sod over a grade that sends water at the foundation just puts fresh grass on an existing problem.
