Ground cover is the least glamorous line on a landscape estimate and the one that most changes how a property looks from the street. Fresh mulch or clean decorative stone with a crisp edge makes everything planted in it look intentional.
It is also functional — suppressing weeds, holding soil moisture, moderating soil temperature, and cutting the maintenance a bed needs through the season. We install for homes and commercial properties across Chesterfield and surrounding communities.
What we install
Mulch or rock
Mulch prevents weed growth, brings out the color of trees, shrubs, and flowers, and reduces bed maintenance through the season. It breaks down over time — which feeds the soil, and which is why it needs refreshing every year or two.
Decorative rock adds texture and color and, laid over fabric, controls weeds without breaking down. It is the one-and-done option for an owner or property manager who does not want an annual mulch line in the budget. The trade-off is that it is harder to change your mind about later, and it does nothing for soil.
Edging is what makes it read as finished
Without a defined edge, mulch migrates into the lawn and grass creeps into the bed until the line disappears and the whole landscape looks fuzzy. A clean edge is most of the visual difference between a maintained property and a neglected one.
A cut edge is simple and looks natural but needs re-cutting periodically; aluminum or paver edging costs more up front and holds its line for years. Which one fits depends on how much maintenance you want to keep doing.
Common questions
- How often does mulch need refreshing?
- Most properties refresh annually to keep the color and depth right; every other year is workable if the beds are otherwise healthy. Mulch breaking down is normal — that is it doing its job on the soil.
- How deep should mulch be?
- Two to three inches is the working range — enough to suppress weeds and hold moisture, not so much that it smothers roots. Keeping it pulled back off trunks and stems matters more than the exact depth.
- Does rock really stop weeds?
- It suppresses them well when installed over fabric, but nothing is permanent — over the years, debris breaks down on top of the stone and weeds will grow in that layer. Periodic cleaning keeps a rock bed looking right.
- Can you install rock over existing mulch?
- Not well. The mulch should come out first, otherwise it continues decomposing under the stone and the bed settles unevenly. Removal is part of a proper conversion.
